Good Bye

Queen’s Pier and Star Ferry Pier in Central, witnessing nearly half a century of local history, had disappear yesterday. These two piers have given the people of Hong Kong great places for fishing, boarding pleasure boats, dating, taking wedding photos and have became part of Hong Kong’s daily life. Queen’s Pier was the goal of cross-harbor swim and a favorite meeting spot for protestors. Star Ferry is the cheapest way of crossing the harbor and was hailed as “50 places of a lifetime” by the National Geographic Traveler Magazine. The two piers have deeper links with the local history: Queen’s Pier was the place for inauguration and welfare ceremonies of governors since Cecil Clementi. The Stary Ferry fare hike of five cents triggered the “Kowloon Disturbances,” this year marks the 40th year since the event.
